Can you eat a fruit dessert that’s made from canned fruit?
Well, it turns out you can, and you can get one made in Australia.
The Food and Drink Institute has launched its Can Canning Made In Australia campaign.
In addition to making a delicious and nutritious dessert for yourself, it also shows the world how a food industry can produce high-quality products and compete on a global scale.
Canning the fruit can have its own benefits and its own pitfalls.
Can you make a fruit pie using canned fruit, or is that too much work?
There are several advantages to making your own fruit, says Dr Richard Cottrell, who works in the food and beverage department at the Australian Institute of Food and Agriculture.
One is that you can eat the fruit, and the process takes just five minutes, he says.
There are also benefits.
If you’re a regular consumer of fruit, it means you’re familiar with its texture and flavour.
And the food industry knows that fruit is a valuable source of protein.
But it’s also cheaper, easier and healthier to eat fruit.
The government-funded research that has helped build this movement has focused on how to minimise the environmental impact of fruit farming.
This is where the real work begins, says Ms Beale.
She wants to see fruit produce be used to feed a growing population and how the supply chain can make food and drinks that are healthier and more environmentally friendly.
“It’s about having a conversation with our food and drink system that’s as much about the future as it is about the present,” she says.
“We want to see a world where people are able to have their own taste buds.”
For example, the campaign is calling for people to have a taste for fresh fruit and to look for varieties that aren’t currently being grown.
The focus of this campaign is not just on the consumer, but on the producers themselves.
The research found that the most common way to make fruit products is to start with the fruit itself, says co-author of the report, Associate Professor Jane Lillis.
“There are a number of factors involved in making a fruit or vegetable.
So, for example, how fresh the fruit is, how well it’s grown, how much moisture the fruit has, how it’s cooked,” she explains.
“Then you need to account for the nutrients that are coming through.”
In fact, there’s no need to grow the fruit at all.
“Just use the fresh fruit,” explains Ms Lillas.
“You can grow it and have a little fun with it and it won’t cost a lot.”
But some producers are taking this idea a step further.
They’re using frozen fruit to create something even more nutritious.
Dr Lilliss says that the idea of eating fresh fruit is gaining momentum.
“When you think about the nutrition benefits of eating a little bit of fruit each day, you have a lot of potential to get really healthy,” she said.
“And there are people who are trying to make that happen and doing it in a way that is sustainable, that is fair, and that is not wasteful.”
And it’s not just fresh fruit.
A recent study found that a frozen apple can contain about as much sugar as a fresh one.
“In a lot, but not all, cases, the nutrients are there to support the growth of the fruit,” she explained.
So what is a healthy and delicious fruit that doesn’t require too much processing?
There’s a lot to consider when it comes to how to prepare a fruit, explains Ms Beall.
The process of harvesting is key.
She says that a healthy, fruit-eating lifestyle should involve lots of eating.
“So you need fruits and vegetables that are well-balanced in nutrition,” she notes.
“What’s important is how well they’re cooked.
And you also need to ensure that you’re getting all of the nutrients in.” “
That’s how it’ll be absorbed into the bloodstream.
And you also need to ensure that you’re getting all of the nutrients in.”
In order to make sure that all the nutrients get into the body, fruit and vegetable processors need to be certified.
They also need the right environmental standards.
But while these standards may be important, they’re not the only thing to consider.
“People want to be able to see the food in the supermarket,” says Dr Cottrel.
“But they don’t want to eat it.”
There’s also the issue of sustainability.
The report found that most of the processing involves burning fossil fuels and deforestation.
There is a growing body of evidence that eating too much fruit could have negative health effects, particularly if the fruit contains the same nutrients as a plant.
The Canning made in a factory campaign aims to raise awareness about the health risks of eating too many fruit and vegetables.
Ms Beal says that this campaign should help get more people to eat healthy.
“I think it will help raise awareness, because it’s the most efficient way to get our focus on the nutrition,” says Ms Bail
